Kowhai Coast Jewellers is back….and in a Big way!
Kowhai Coast Jewellers is now not only your trusted traditional village jewellery shop but one with a strong focus on service, quality, and technological advances in jewellery repair and manufacture.
Trading in Warkworth for several decades, Kowhai Coast Jewellers has come to be recognised as one of the area’s most well-known sources for jewellery and services. In October 2016, that torch was passed to new owners and a new vision was born. After briefly closing for one week to make some changes and give the place a new shine-up, Greg & Elly reopened under the same name but with a completely new outlook on what they wanted Kowhai Coast Jewellers to be and the direction in which they wanted it to grow.
Kowhai Coast Jewellers now provides access to technology such as laser welding (for work on costume jewellery), an array of advanced gemmological equipment (for on-site insurance valuations and historical research of prized family heirlooms), and the utilisation of Computer Aided Design (enabling the creation of crisp and clear images of what your jewellery will look like before we even begin the physical work). Kowhai Coast Jewellers is not your average village jewellery shop any more.
About the Owners:
Greg, a native of Southern California, has been in the global jewellery industry for about 13 years, having started his career as a Diamond Grader at the headquarters of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Carlsbad, California while studying Environmental Geology. It was then that the allure of the Caribbean and Alaska drew Greg away from his beloved GIA and into a Diamond Specialist position, shortly thereafter becoming Island Manager with one of the world’s largest luxury jewellery retailers. After the global financial crisis struck, Greg returned to California where he thrived in the second-hand and Estate jewellery buying industry before being offered a contract in Florence, Italy, to design and equip an advanced gemmological and mineralogical laboratory for the local government and university. Once work was complete, Greg and his wife Elly, decided it was time to relocate back to Elly’s ‘home’ of New Zealand. After 4+ successful years managing a jewellery business in Auckland, the opportunity to purchase Kowhai Coast Jewellers presented itself.
During Greg’s time in New Zealand he has been fortunate to have been tapped to join the Jewellery Valuation Society of NZ (JVS) and still serves as it’s Treasurer, and shortly thereafter joined the Jewellers Association of NZ (JANZ) ; the jewellery arm of Retail New Zealand where he very quickly worked his way up to the position of Chairman.
He is also a member of the Gemmological Association of New Zealand, and is proud to now have a position on the Kowhai Festival Committee, assisting in the planning and organisation of one of New Zealand’s largest street fairs.
Elly, a Kiwi who grew up in Auckland but then spent many years in the United States, had never forgotten her Kiwi roots and desire to once again live in New Zealand. After meeting Greg while both were living in San Diego, California, she finally fulfilled her aspiration to move back to her home country in 2012. Elly helps to drive the core of Kowhai Coast Jewellers and is also instrumental in the selection of beautiful jewellery and the overall feel of our lovely new and improved shop.
